It has been a beautiful day in Cleveland today!

This morning started off with the St. Malachi 5 miler.  It was a cold, cold morning.  Much colder than I expected.  The forecast indicated it would be about 10* warmer, but instead it hovered right around 30* at the start.

I managed to leave the house this morning without eating anything, so Rob and I made an emergency pit stop at Rego’s In Rocky River to get a banana and some G2.  While I headed to the start line, Rob headed to West Side Market to kill some time.

I had heard that the course was very hilly and so I was a little apprehensive going out too quickly.  Lucky for me, it was so crowded that I couldn’t have gone any faster even if I had wanted to be speedier.  It’s been awhile since I’ve run a road race and I had forgotten how crowded they can be in the first few miles.  I felt like I was jockeying for a free running lane until the third mile.

The first hill that really killed me was running back up W. 3rd street back into downtown.

The other hill that I was dreading, but that wasn’t too bad, was the hill up out of the East bank of the Flats.  The last slow incline going over the bridge was great and the closer and closer I got to the finish line, the faster I got!

Thanks to Rob for being an impromptu iPhone photographer and bringing me flowers!

I finished in 42:16, averaging 8:27 per mile.

After the race, we had breakfast at BonBon on Lorain Road.  I had the herbed omelet and a café au lait.  It was delicious! I couldn’t finish my coffee before we left, so they brought me this adorable to go coffee cup.

Three cheers for a PR and for a great weekend.

I didn’t know you were going to be there or I would have looked for you!
Great pace (esp with those killer hills)!
